Integration Platform (Andreas and Dake)

Platform: task manager and hardware manager.

Our platform is based around controller (called Senior) with both an interface to an on-chip network and an accelerator interface. Long running tasks that can run with little or no interference from the platform controller are offloaded to computation units connected to the OCN. Short running tasks with high computational load can be handled directly by the controller by offloading parts of these tasks to accelerator through the accelerator interface which allows the instruction set of the controller to be enhanced with custom instructions.

Adaptive MIMO Decoder (Di, Johan, and Dake)

MIMO systems, different transmission schemes such as Space-Time Coding , Spatial Multiplexing and beamforming are used to enhance the performance of wireless communications by utilizing various dimensions of freedom. In case different transmission schemes are used, the receiver will have different decoder complexity. In the real-world environment, there exist quite a few environmental constraints (such as the channel features, the amount of computing power available etc) which will limit the achievable performance of these schemes. Therefore, the system needs to be flexible enough so that it can be reconfigured in real-time to achieve the optimal trade-off based on the environment (in another word, resources that are available). Programmable Application Specific Processor (ASIP) is one of the most promising solutions that allows SDR to be realized owing to the advance of VLSI technologies. Although the research of MIMO PHY layer algorithms is already well-established with a huge number of papers published, the research on MIMO VLSI implementation is still not thoroughly investigated. Especially the programmability is an essential issue to be addressed since more and more heterogeneous standards are emerging with different forces backing up them.

Adaptive MIMO Channel Estimation (Di, Johan, and Dake)

Channel estimation usually involves intensive computation in the baseband processing of MIMO receivers, thus making it an important issue to be addressed. There have been several categories of channel estimation methods existing. Our research investigates the trade-off of different MIMO channel estimation methods under different channel environment. The purpose is to enable the reconfiguration of the channel estimation method for SDR.
